The Skinny 2008
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 2008

Hi Folks,
Here are several things we hope will foster "Peace on earth and goodwill towards men and women" and distract you from the trainwreck that we're witnessing these days in our nation's capital. As Mick Jagger said at Altamont just before the shit hit the fan, "Come on cats, stop fighting". And we all know how that turned out...

1) Josh and Andy are playing an acoustic show for the good people at the Vital Spark Folk Society this coming Saturday night, December 6th, at the Brooklin Community Centre. Ticket and directions info can be found here - http://www.vitalsparkfolksociety.ca/

2) Tickets are going fast for our annual pre-Christmas weekend at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, December 19th and 20th. Special guests the Beauties will be joining us both nights. If you haven't got your tickets yet you can find them at http://www.maplemusic.com/dept.asp?dept_id=15 or through the front bar at the Horseshoe  http://www.horseshoetavern.com/

3) Jerry Leger has just released a new record, You, Me and the Horse that was co-produced by Josh. To find out more check out  http://www.jerryleger.com/ and http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=21652444

4) Andy has recently produced a Christmas record for Kith & Kin (Ivy Mairi, her mother Kathleen McDonnell and sister Martha Farquhar - McDonnell) called Yet Will I be Merry. It's a collection of medieval carols and Appalachian hymns featuring beautiful three part family - style harmonies. You can hear four songs at  www.myspace.com/kithandkintrio  and if you like what you hear you can pick the album up at http://www.maplemusic.com/product.asp?dept%5Fid=69&pf%5Fid=4660%2D02&lang=EN

See you soon - and Happy Holidays!

Skydiggers
City of Sirens
By Vish Khanna (Exclaim!)

Still one of Canada's most reliably great live bands, Toronto, ON's Skydiggers have written an excellent new record that speaks to their gift for emotionally rich and complex songs. Principal songwriters Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson may not always get the credit but they know how to get to the heart of a matter, rendering songs flush with hard love, bewildered anger and mostly hope with a rare, sincere purity. There's no fear of ridicule or reprisal in "Hello, Beautiful Life," which is about as earnest as a ballad can be. Ripe with teasing humour, "One Last Chance" belts forward with affection, as newbies Noel Webb and Michael Johnston prove welcome additions to the Skydiggers sound. If Tom Petty lurks within the title track, the rest of the Traveling Wilburys pop by on "Where's My Baby Tonight?" and the irreverent "Hasty Mart." There are politics floating there and throughout the Dylan-esque "Everybody Wants" but it's all done undercover, as the Skydiggers add a spry chapter to their enviable legacy. (Latent)
